Gender affirmation surgery, also known as gender confirmation surgery or bottom surgery, is a series of surgical procedures that help transgender individuals align their physical characteristics with their gender identity. Transfeminine Surgeries:
Full Depth Vaginoplasty: Involves removal of male genital organs and constructing a functional neovagina using penile and scrotal tissue or peritoneal tissue. It includes creating a sensate clitoris, aesthetic labia majora and minora as well as a functioning urethra. This can be achieved using penile inversion technique or in conjunction with robotics based on each individual’s anatomy.
Vulvoplasty: Also known as shallow depth vaginoplasty, offers all aspects of vaginoplasty but without a vaginal canal. This is the preferred technique for individuals who desire an aesthetic and fully sensate vagina but not interested in penetrative intercourse.
Orchiectomy: Involves removal of male gonads to address dysphoria and decrease hormone requirements. It can be done in isolation or in conjunction with other gender affirming surgeries.
Transmasculine Surgeries:
Hysterectomy and Oophorectomy: Removes the uterus and ovaries to eliminate menstrual periods and estrogen production. We can offer referral to local gynecologists for this procedure.
Metoidioplasty: Uses testosterone-enlarged genital tissue to create a small penis, with possible urethral lengthening. We offer this procedure on an individual basis.
Phalloplasty*: Constructs a penis using tissue grafts from other body parts, with potential scrotoplasty and implant insertions.
*We do not currently offer primary phalloplasty but revision phalloplasty including urethral reconstruction is considered on a case by case basis.
