Who We Are
Urology of Virginia has provided comprehensive urological care in Hampton Roads for over 100 years. Founded in 1922 by Charles Devine, the practice began growing in the 1950s. The practice gained an international reputation for genitourinary reconstructive surgery, developing new surgical techniques to correct urethral strictures and hypospadias that are still used today. In 1965, Urology of Virginia became one of the few private practices in the country to have a residency program. In the 1970s, we were instrumental in helping establish Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Virginia, serving as faculty and becoming one of the first established EVMS departments.
Dr. Paul Schellhammer joined the group in 1974 with a focus on treating urological cancers with the latest methods. Dr. Gerald Jordan led the pelvic reconstruction program, upholding the practice’s international reputation for advanced procedures. Today, our group of 30+ urologists continues to use the latest technology and research to offer innovative care. We still serve as faculty at EVMS and offer two residency spots per year, one through the American Urological Association and one through the Navy. We also offer fellowships in urinary reconstruction and endourology with several fellows currently in training. Globally renowned, the practice continues to grow to help meet the needs of all patients and has 6 locations throughout the regions of Virginia. Telemedicine is the natural next step for a practice with a history of innovation, allowing Urology of Virginia to continue to offer quality care serving the specialized needs of patients. As an independent practice, Urology of Virginia maintains strong relationships with all the regional healthcare systems. We also utilize an ambulatory surgery center at our Virginia Beach location, reducing costs for patients and making care more efficient.
